February 15, 2024

Dear CWB Community,

As we eagerly prepare our fleet for the upcoming boating season in Seattle, we reflect on the incredible journey we've shared at our beloved Cama Beach facility over the past 15 years. Together, we've created memories, fostered community, and celebrated the beauty of wooden boats and maritime heritage.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the indefinite closure of operations at our Cama Beach facility. The Washington State Parks, our gracious host, have informed us of their decision to halt operations due to essential infrastructure renovation projects. While we navigate this unexpected turn of events, we extend our deepest gratitude to all the volunteers and visitors who have contributed to making Cama Beach a cherished place of connection and exploration.

Though uncertainty looms over what the future holds, our commitment to preserving maritime traditions and fostering community remains unwavering. We will continue to explore options and seek opportunities to serve our mission in new and meaningful ways.

Thank you for your continued support and dedication to the Center for Wooden Boats. Though the horizon may be uncertain, let's set our sails towards new adventures, knowing that the spirit of our community will guide us through any waters we may face. Together, we will navigate these challenges and emerge even stronger, ready to embrace the opportunities that lie ahead.

Warm regards,

Josh

Josh Anderson
CWB Executive Director

Cama Beach Closure

Cama Beach State Park will be suspending operations in the lower beach area, including the CWB buildings and cabins, effective immediately due to complicated infrastructure failure. They issued an official alert and there was a segment on King 5 News and HeraldNet about the issue. For now Washington State Parks has said the closure is indefinite and indicated that any repairs would likely take a substantial amount of time. We don’t know at this moment what the long-term outlook will be for operating again but do know that it won’t be possible for CWB this year.

Thank you to all our dedicated Cama Beach volunteers for your time and work at Cama and how much of a treasured experience you made it for all who came to rent from the livery or craft Toy Boats. We hope to see all our Cama friends at the SLU Campus in the near future!

Olive Theodore started Walrus Boat Recycling, a non-profit organization dedicated to saving and upcycling boats while tackling a variety of socioeconomic and environmental challenges. The organization's goal is to help boat owners by acquiring legal possession of their yachts and providing information to help them decide what to do next. They recycle boats by either giving them a new life at sea or demolishing them, depending on their state.

Walrus also plans to target homelessness, emphasizing the interconnection of socioeconomic issues and will collaborate with a wide range of specialists and partners, including maritime experts, legal consultants, and community groups. They will also work with marinas, government organizations, and academic institutions to achieve their objectives.

THANK YOU TO ALL 800 OF OUR ACTIVE VOLUNTEERS IN 2023!
What an incredible year it's been for the CWB Volunteers! Across both SLU and CAMA locations, a remarkable 13,238 hours were dedicated – an impressive 14.3% increase from last year! Our volunteer community didn't just work hard; they also had a blast participating in various events throughout the year. From the festivities of National Volunteer Week to the excitement of our 4th of July Bash, the camaraderie of monthly Community Nights, and the warmth of our Annual Volunteer Appreciation Potluck at the HELM, our volunteers truly made each moment memorable. As we reflect on 2023, it's clear that CWB's success in running Livery, hosting Public Sail, keeping our boats afloat, and fostering a vibrant community wouldn't be possible without the dedication of our outstanding 800 active volunteers. Here's to an amazing team and an even brighter future ahead!

As we gather this holiday season, we're filled with gratitude for the incredible support surrounding The Center for Wooden Boats. A special shout-out to Lydia, our Volunteer of the Year, whose dedication exemplifies the spirit of our community.

Your commitment and passion drive us forward in preserving the art of wooden boat craftsmanship and providing access to the water. As we approach the year's end, we invite you to support our mission through your contributions. Your generosity helps sustain our efforts and inspires future enthusiasts.

Thank you for being the wind in our sails. Wishing you a joyful Thanksgiving and looking forward to continued journeys together.

Warm regards,

Josh

That's a Wrap on 2023 Public Sails!

Thank you to everyone who participated in Sunday Public Sail this year! Returning this staple program to CWB after a long pandemic-induced hiatus has been a reminder of how important and special providing access to the water is. Huge shout out to our dedicated volunteer base who help run Public Sail, from skippering boats, to running registration, to wrangling boats on the dock, this event is made possible by our volunteers dedicating their time and skills to help us run Public Sail smoothly. In 2023 we were able to get 1,041 passengers on Lake Union for free through Sunday Public Sail.

Public Sail will return in 2024 with the first Public Sail scheduled for Free Boating Day on April 28th!
Thank you to the following organizations for helping to fund this monthly public program:
HALLOWEEN BASH
There was a scary good turnout at our Halloween Bash this year! Lions, tigers, dragons, and more monsters and creatures took over our docks in search of sweet, sweet, treats and treasure. Over 100 kids attended with families to complete our Halloween Treasure map. They had to complete the activities on their maps to collect candy and stickers. When they were done they could turn in their map for a prize from our treasure chest!

Shout out to Sue Kimpton, our volunteer who runs Wooden Boat Storytime for setting up a special Halloween Storytime, and to all the extra volunteers who helped us with this spooky closing event to Public Sail.
North Lake Union Boat Restoration Update!
One of the Blanchards being restored at our North Lake Union shop received a whiskey plank this month! Kudos to those who have been working hard on restoration projects at our NLU shop. If you are interested in helping with the restoration, consider becoming a volunteer.

Hello Wooden Boaters,

September was a busy month full of events for CWB as we visited our friends in Port Townsend at the Wooden Boat Festival, built toy-boats with hundreds of youth at the Fall Fisherman’s Festival and Boats Afloat Show in Seattle, and hosted our annual Norm Blanchard W.O.O.D. Regatta! Restoration and maintenance season is underway as we prepare our vessels for 2024. We’re particularly excited to host architect Bruce Arnold for this month’s Third Friday Speaker as he discusses the Northwest Native Canoe Center, our soon-to-be new neighbors in South Lake Union Park. Hope to see you there!

We recommend lining up in front of the Wagner Education Center at or before 10 AM. Boat rides are scheduled with the earliest departure happening at 10:30 AM and the final boat departing at 3:15. Check out our website here to learn more about what to expect when attending Sunday Public Sail

Thank you to the following organizations for helping to fund this monthly public program:
A little bit of Seattle rain did not dampen the spirits of our W.O.O.D. Regatta racers this year! It was a fun day of sailboat racing with PLENTY of wind. We had a total of 21 boats in the regatta, 12 small boats and 9 large boats. Out of the boats who participated, 15 were part of CWB’s fleet.

The day began with two races starting at noon, followed up by a lunch break. After the lunch break, there was one more race which was followed up by our end-of-the-season BBQ! Due to the challenging weather and winds, there were a total of 10 finishers for all three races, including 5 small boats and 5 large boats.
Our end of season BBQ was a fun gathering of racers, volunteers and staff in the Bill Garden Boats Shop! We were thrilled to see the cloudy skies clear up for a beautiful evening of celebrating the regatta winners and reminiscing on another fantastic boating season. We had a great spread of food and beverages for all who attended. Thank you to Capt. Gary Bangs and all volunteers who assisted in making the W.O.O.D. Regatta possible! Another big thanks to Republic of Cider for donating a pony keg of “Cider for Wooden Boats” – their new brew named for CWB also available at their SoDo Tasting Room!

Volunteer Community Nights
Since April, our recently hired Volunteer Coordinator, Elyse, has been organizing monthly volunteer community nights! These are casual evenings for our volunteers to get together once per month to socialize and participate in a group activity together.

So far this year our volunteers have been invited to participate in: board games and potluck night, craft night, a visit to the Old Boathouse, contra dance lessons, drum salsa lessons night, and a South Lake Union scavenger hunt!

This month's community night will be Halloween decoration night to prepare for our Halloween Bash. Next month will be a yoga night instructed by one of our staff members.

Join our growing community of volunteers and learn more about the perks by attending our next volunteer orientation on October 14th at 10 AM!
2023 Wooden Boat Festival Fun!
In early September our staff made a quick voyage to Port Townsend for the 2023 Wooden Boat Festival! We contributed 4 boats to the festival this year, including: our freshly launched Port Madison Pram, Mary I, our Lake Oswego Rowboat, Peggy C., the freshly painted Halcyon, and the cutest little steamboat on the docks, Puffin.

Thank you to our supportive Board of Trustees and to our dedicated staff and volunteers who assisted in preparing our boats and other essentials for the festival. It is always encouraging to see new and familiar faces in the wooden boat community and inspires us to further our mission!
Building Toy Boats Around Town
We had a busy month in September for toy boat building! Well over a thousand toy boats were made between our monthly Public Sail and Wooden Boat Storytime along with help from the Fall Boats Afloat Show, and the Fall Fishermen's Festival.
We made a few special edition toy boats for the Fall Fishermen's Festival this year! Click here to download copies of their simple designs to make your own toy fishing boat at our next toy boat building opportunity

Ahoy Wooden Boaters,

The days are getting shorter and the air a little crisper, but we all know September is the best month for sailing! We just wrapped up another successfully busy season of youth summer camps, boatbuilding classes, and general fun on the water. The action isn’t over though. This weekend we’ll be visiting our friends over in Port Townsend for the Wooden Boat Festival, so come say hi if you are attending! We’ll also be hosting toy boatbuilding at the Boats Afloat Show and the Fall Fisherman’s Festival. At the end of the month, we’ll wrap things up by hosting the annual Norm Blanchard W.O.O.D. Regatta and Public Sail.

Hope to see you around,

Josh Anderson
CWB Executive Director

Summer Camps have officially come to a close! It was a great summer, many boats were built and sailed, and even more memories were made.

Our sailing campers learned new skills and improved their sailing abilities while connecting with
each other and the water. Our woodworking campers designed and built their own creations, they even made a cat tree for our office cat Harvey!

Our last week of Quick and Daring campers worked together to build a Viking-style longboat
and named her Sea Puppy. She did not make it far into the lake for her maiden and only voyage, but she sure did teach the kids a lot about boat construction!

Although there are no more summer camps to sign up for, there are still a few opportunities for kids to come have some fun on our docks this fall. Mark your calendars for October 29th (same day as Public Sail), when we will be having a Halloween bash with lots of family fun activities and plenty of candy to steal!

Traditional Navigation: Tides And Currents
Coming Up on October 7

This is a 5-hour course that will focus on understanding how to use Tide and Current publications as part of your navigation toolkit. Using these publications is a critical skill for sailing on Puget Sound where we have big tides and strong currents.

It is an essential aspect of trip planning or even day sailing throughout the year. We will provide the tools you need for the class.

Pricing: $350 (Non-Members) | $250 (Members)

It's Almost a Wrap for 2023 CLC Classes

Great work done by our Chesapeake Light Craft Boatbuilding students so far this year, led by our Woodworking Instructor, Ducky! Our most recent group assembled CLC Wood Duck Kayak kits.

Starting with pre-cut plywood parts, students assembled the hull and deck of their kayak using copper wires and epoxy glue. They then cut hatches, fiberglassed the boat, and installed the cockpit coaming. During construction, students learned more outfitting the boat with seats, foot braces, hatch fittings, and how to complete deck rigging.

Want to build your own CLC boat kit? Kits must be ordered at least 45 days before the start of class, so there are no more opportunities to participate this year, but plenty of time to get prepared for next year! Visit our website www.cwb.org/chesapeake-light-craft-boatbuilding-classes to learn more about the program.

Registration for next year's CLC classes opens soon! Follow us on social media to be the first to know.
