Dear CWB Community,
As we eagerly prepare our fleet for the upcoming boating season in Seattle, we reflect on the incredible journey we've shared at our beloved Cama Beach facility over the past 15 years. Together, we've created memories, fostered community, and celebrated the beauty of wooden boats and maritime heritage.
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the indefinite closure of operations at our Cama Beach facility. The Washington State Parks, our gracious host, have informed us of their decision to halt operations due to essential infrastructure renovation projects. While we navigate this unexpected turn of events, we extend our deepest gratitude to all the volunteers and visitors who have contributed to making Cama Beach a cherished place of connection and exploration.
Though uncertainty looms over what the future holds, our commitment to preserving maritime traditions and fostering community remains unwavering. We will continue to explore options and seek opportunities to serve our mission in new and meaningful ways.
Thank you for your continued support and dedication to the Center for Wooden Boats. Though the horizon may be uncertain, let's set our sails towards new adventures, knowing that the spirit of our community will guide us through any waters we may face. Together, we will navigate these challenges and emerge even stronger, ready to embrace the opportunities that lie ahead.
Warm regards,
Josh
Josh Anderson
CWB Executive Director

Cama Beach Closure
Cama Beach State Park will be suspending operations in the lower beach area, including the CWB buildings and cabins, effective immediately due to complicated infrastructure failure. They issued an official alert and there was a segment on King 5 News and HeraldNet about the issue. For now Washington State Parks has said the closure is indefinite and indicated that any repairs would likely take a substantial amount of time. We don’t know at this moment what the long-term outlook will be for operating again but do know that it won’t be possible for CWB this year.
Thank you to all our dedicated Cama Beach volunteers for your time and work at Cama and how much of a treasured experience you made it for all who came to rent from the livery or craft Toy Boats. We hope to see all our Cama friends at the SLU Campus in the near future!

Olive Theodore started Walrus Boat Recycling, a non-profit organization dedicated to saving and upcycling boats while tackling a variety of socioeconomic and environmental challenges. The organization's goal is to help boat owners by acquiring legal possession of their yachts and providing information to help them decide what to do next. They recycle boats by either giving them a new life at sea or demolishing them, depending on their state.
Walrus also plans to target homelessness, emphasizing the interconnection of socioeconomic issues and will collaborate with a wide range of specialists and partners, including maritime experts, legal consultants, and community groups. They will also work with marinas, government organizations, and academic institutions to achieve their objectives.

Lofting | June 7-9, 2024
Lofting is the step between a set of plans being created and building a boat. It involves enlarging the drafted plans to full size on the “mould loft floor.” It includes the three views of the boat for ease of taking full scale patterns and reference for the build.
You will learn start to finish how to turn a table of offsets into a full-scale lines drawing, troubleshoot any discrepancies that might be in the original plans, and take patterns off a loft floor drawing. In this three-day class, led by boatbuilder Eric Hvalsoe, you will loft a Bill Garden designed “Tom Cat.”
