CWB May Newsletter

May 1, 2026

Dear Friend,

As we head into our 50th Anniversary Season, we’re embracing an ambitious year, one focused on expanding access to the water, advancing critical restoration work, and bringing our community together in meaningful ways.

It has already been incredible to see the docks come back to life. Boats are out, programs are underway, and the energy across campus is something special. This is the time of year when so much of what we do comes together, on the water, in the Boatshop, and throughout the community that has shaped CWB for five decades.

As part of this milestone year, we’re excited to share a Save-the-Date for our 50th Anniversary Reunion on Saturday, August 22 from 5:00–8:00 PM. We look forward to gathering past and present members, volunteers, supporters, and friends to share stories, reconnect, and celebrate the community that has made CWB what it is today. A formal invitation with more details will be coming soon and I hope you’ll plan to join us.

You’ll also be hearing from us soon about GiveBIG on May 5, an important moment each year that helps power the programs, restoration, access, and hands-on experiences that make CWB so special.

For now, we’re simply grateful to be back on the water and grateful to have you as part of this community.

With gratitude,
Corey McDaniel
Development Director

GiveBIG!

Get ready for GiveBIG on May 5th! This Statewide day of giving is a great way to support the Center's programming. Approximately 90-100,000 people visited our campus last year to make use of CWB's programs. This is a unique place we all share and your support ensures we can give every one of those 90,000 people an amazing experience!

Early giving started April 28th so you can already make a gift HERE.

Mother's Day Public Sail

Get ready for our Mother's Day Public Sail May10th! If you’re looking for the perfect Mother's Day activity, look no further. Our Sunday Public Sail is a perfect way to spend a bit of time together and make some memories that will last. We hold Public Sail once per month from 1pm-5pm; sign up in front of the Wagner Education Center and arrive early! This is a first come first served program.

Also, don’t miss our Youth Wooden Boat Storytime and Toy Boat Building.

Jubilee Art Exhibition

CWB is excited to announce our newest visiting exhibit, Prima Marine Artists' “A Nautical Celebration.” The exhibit opens May 6th and will be here through November 8th.

It features 17 artists from throughout the West Coast and Hawaii displaying 37 pieces of their best marine work, most of which are for sale. Make sure to stop by and take in these unique perspectives on our local waters.

50th Anniversary Reunion Event

Save the Date now for our 50th Anniversary Reunion on Saturday, August 22, from 5:00-8:00 PM. This is a special year for the Center as we reflect on what the last 50 years have held for our shared organization.

Our community has expanded with the years to include new programs and boats but what makes it CWB has not changed. Access to the water, shared with passionate, wonderful people. This gaterhing is not a fundraiser, but an invitation to celebrate community and share all the stories that CWB has helped create, from its first year, to its latest.

Our first Sunday Public Sail of the Year!

Last month we hosted our first public sail of the year. Under partly cloudy skies our skippers and volunteers did an outstanding job showing off our beautiful lake and wonderful fleet. Boathouse 5 was a particular hit, ferrying folks past gasworks and back again. Many a family left our docks smiling so good job to everyone who helped pull it off!

General Restoration Update

Here's a peak behind the scenes on some of the restoration projects the Center is currently undertaking.

El Toros: As we approach the summer, were taking the time to refresh our fleet of El Toros. This work is being headed by our new Boatwright Apprentice, Alex! He's made great progress, already completing work on three of of the vessels and well on his way on another three, basically as many as he can fit in the floating boat shop at a time.

Dora: One project particularly close to our hearts is the restoration of our beloved charter boat, Dora. Commissioned in 2007, Dora is currently having her keel replaced. It’s a tricky process, but one we're eager to undertake. Our Boatwright, John is currently working on Dora at our NLU Shop and hopes to have her back in service by this summer.

Visit our Donation Page HERE to support getting Dora back on the waters of Lake Union!

Youth Summer Camps & Racing Teams

Our Youth Summer Camps are still open for sign ups in the months of June through August, but they're filling up fast! These programs are some of the most impactful CWB offers, teaching maritime skills and traditions that can be applied far beyond the water.

Also make sure to check out our Race Teams. CWB's Youth Sailing team is returning, but this year it's joined by a Youth Dragon Boat team. These are exciting opportunities for kids to work on teamwork and communication, so make sure to check it out.

April 2026 Newsletter

CWB April Newsletter

April 5, 2026

Dear Friend,

Fifty years ago, Dick and Colleen Wagner set out to create something simple and radical, a place where people could experience maritime history not behind glass, but out on the water.

What began in 1976 as a small collection of boats and a vision for a “living museum” has grown into The Center for Wooden Boats, a community shaped by people, stories, first sails, time in the Boatshop, and a shared belief that access to the water matters.

As we begin our 50th Anniversary Season, we’re not just marking time, we’re celebrating what this place has made possible for generations of Seattle families, volunteers, and visitors who have found connection here on Lake Union.

That celebration begins on Sunday, April 12 with our first Free Public Sail of the season. Registration opens at 1:00 PM, we encourage you to arrive early as space is limited, and the first boats head out at 1:30 PM. It’s one of the clearest expressions of who we are, opening the docks and putting people on the water, together.

Milestones like this invite reflection, but they also ask something more of us. What we build now, how we care for this place, and how we expand access will define what the next 50 years become.

Thank you for being part of this community, and for helping carry this work forward.

We’ll see you on the docks.

Josh Anderson
Executive Director

50th Anniversary Opening Weekend Public Sail

Our 50th anniversary opening is set for the 12th of April with our first Sunday Public Sail of the season. This is a time of celebration and reflection for the Center, and there's no better thing for it than to get as many people as possible on the water. We will be holding Public Sail once per month from 1pm-5pm; sign up in front of the Wagner Education Center and arrive early! This is a first come first served program.

Also, don’t miss our Youth Wooden Boat Storytime and Toy Boat Building.

The Center for Wooden Boats is excited to present
“Filipinos and Washington’s Waterfront.”

Come join us at the Wagner Education Center to view our newest exhibit exploring the history of Filipinos and Filipino-Americans on Washington’s waterfronts. Members of our community, and their stories, who have shaped the Northwest into what it is today.

The Center for Wooden Boats is so pleased to host this important piece of our maritime history in partnership with The Filipino American National Historical Society and Maritime Washington.

This exhibit will be open to the public from April to mid-May, so stop in and check it out.

Congrats on a beautiful Spring Fling Regatta!

On March 28th we hosted our first Regatta of the year. With sunny skies as the backdrop, over 20 sailors made their way to South Lake Union to race. Competition was fierce as the wind picked up for the afternoon's events, but spirits were never higher than when boats came off the water to celebrate. Huge thanks to all the volunteers, staff, and racers who participated!

March 2026 Newsletter

CWB March Newsletter

March 8, 2026

Dear Friend,

As winter gives way to longer days on Lake Union, we’re excited to welcome everyone back to the docks. It has been a quiet few months since our last newsletter, but behind the scenes the team has been preparing for what promises to be a very special season at The Center for Wooden Boats.

On March 14, the livery opens for the year, one of our favorite moments when the boats return to the water and the campus comes back to life. This season carries added meaning as we begin celebrating CWB’s 50th anniversary. For five decades, people have gathered here to learn, build, volunteer, and share the simple joy of getting out on the water.

Looking ahead, the summer calendar is filling quickly with special events, programs, and opportunities to connect and get on the water. We’re especially excited to bring back our Sunday Public Sails, welcoming even more people to experience Lake Union. We have also introduced new digital membership cards to make it easier for members to access their benefits and stay connected to the CWB community.

As we reflect on the past fifty years, we’re reminded that this place has always been powered by people, volunteers, members, and supporters who believe maritime heritage should be lived and shared. Thank you for being part of this community as we begin the next fifty years together.

Fair winds,
Josh Anderson
Executive Director

CWB October Newsletter

October 2025

October 7, 2025

Dear Friend,

As the newest member of The Center for Wooden Boats team, I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself and say how honored I am to be part of this remarkable community. Since joining CWB in July, I have been inspired daily by the people who make this place so special, the volunteers, instructors, and visitors who keep our docks alive with curiosity and care.

If we have not met yet, I hope to see you at one of our upcoming fall events or out on the water soon. While we continue sailing year-round, things naturally slow down as the weather shifts. The change of season gives our team a chance to reflect, make repairs, and prepare for the months ahead, all while staying connected to the community that keeps this place moving forward.

With gratitude,
Corey McDaniel

A New Chapter for Two Historic BJKs

Two historic BJKs (Blanchard Junior Knockabouts)  — Pamela (1936) and Footloose (1948) — have been lovingly restored by CWB staff and volunteers and will soon return to the water. Their launches will take place ahead of the Norm Blanchard W.O.O.D. Regatta, but the true celebration happens at the Regatta on September 20, where we hope to see them racing in all their glory.

These boats embody the spirit of our living museum — vessels brought back to life to be sailed, shared, and cherished once again.
