ABOUT OUR INSTRUCTORS

CHRISTIAN HOLTZ: Private Lesson Instructor
Christian Holtz has a USCG 100 ton Master’s license and is certified by US Sailing to Basic Keelboat Instructor and by the American Sailing Association (ASA) through Advanced Coastal Cruising Instructor. He has instructed hundreds of individuals and couples in sailing and seamanship skills aboard a variety of sailing vessels on Seattle’s Lake Union through CWB’s SailNOW! and Private Lesson programs. (For reviews click on “One-on-One sailing lesson” under adult programs at www.cwb.org.)

Previously he taught sailing, navigation, and cruising classes for the Seattle Sailing Club, YachtLease at Elliott Bay, WindWorks Sailing Center and San Juan Sailing in Bellingham,WA.

Capt. Holtz has worked as a delivery captain and have been retained as a consultant by boat brokers and owners to teach docking, close-quarter manuevering, coastal cruising and navigation skills, and marine systems familiarization aboard large sailing and motor vessels on Puget Sound and in the San Juan Islands.

NANCY ENGEL: Private Lesson Instructor
Nancy has a USCG 50 Ton Masters License and US Sailing Association Basic Keelboat Instructor certification.

Nancy learned to sail on the Great Lakes as a kid. She moved to Seattle to attend UW and began crewing in sailboat races on Puget Sound. She has chartered cruising sailboats in the San Juans, the Great Lakes and the South Pacific. Her career in international development eventually led to overseas assignments and she has managed to talk her way onto sailboats on six different continents. Nancy has been teaching sailing at CWB since 2014. She loves sharing her passion for sailing with others: introducing people to the joy of sailing and helping them master the basic skills.

NED FLASH: Adult Sailing Supervisor, and Private Lesson Instructor
Ned has been sailing for as long as he can remember. He began by racing dinghies such as Lasers and 420s and sailing his family’s 32 ft sloop in the Finger Lakes Region of New York as well as coastal sailing in Maine. Directly after high school Ned spent 9 months at sea aboard a 230 ft. tall ship, sailing 18,500 nautical miles including two Atlantic crossings. It was during this trip that he realized that sailing would become his career. Since then he has become a US Sailing Association Certified Instructor. His passion in instruction come in teaching on the Centers collection of smaller traditionally rigged boats such as the Beetle Cat and Woods Hole Sprit Boat.
