Sailing Checkout

Before using our historic wooden sailboats, you must first pass a sailing checkout to ensure you are comfortable handling traditional small boats. Checkouts are not intended to be a lesson and minimal assistance will be provided by the instructor. Rather they are a thorough 25-minute evaluation of a sailor’s skills with basic sailboat maneuvers, docking, and understanding of right-of-way rules. If a sailor does not pass the checkout, we may recommend one or more hours of private sailing lessons with instruction which may include a checkout. If you know you’re a bit rusty or would like more time getting acquainted with our boats and docks, please consider booking a private lesson instead of a checkout. You can make a note in your reservation that you would like to attempt a checkout during your lesson.

Checkouts are scheduled on-line in advance. Walkups are rarely possible as instructors are engaged in lessons. Keep in mind that we require at least 3 knots of wind for a check-out, so if the wind is too light, the checkout may need to be rescheduled for a later time. In order for your checkout to remain current, you must sail a boat in our Livery at least once every 12 months.  If your check-out is not current, you will be asked to schedule and pass another sailing checkout.

Livery Checkout Price: $60 member | $75 general.

** We may open up checkout slots dynamically one or two weeks out as instructors have availability. If still having trouble scheduling a checkout, please contact: adultsailing@cwb.org.

CHECKOUT REQUIREMENTS:

During the course of a sailing checkout, sailors must demonstrate ability to maintain control of the boat at all times. Using clear voice commands and proper body motions, the sailor must complete the following maneuvers single-handed in a sloop-rigged boat while controlling the mainsail, jib, and tiller. Multiple attempts are fine, given the sailor maintains control of the vessel at all times:

  • Depart under sail

  • Return to the dock under sail

  • Execute several short-tacks

  • Execute several controlled jibes

  • Get the boat out of irons to port or starboard, as directed by instructor

  • Demonstrate an understanding of Right of Way rules
