SCHEDULE: multiple positions available, weekends required, flexible schedule, 15-20 hours/week

The Center for Wooden Boats (CWB) is a hands-on maritime museum where every visitor has opportunities to engage in heritage experiences. Founded in 1976, our mission is to provide a gathering place where maritime history comes alive through direct experience and our small craft heritage is enjoyed, preserved, and passed along to future generations. Our programs include boat rentals, sailing lessons, historic exhibits, free boat rides, public workshops and classes, boat restoration, a lecture series, and our signature Lake Union Wooden Boat Festival. These programs are delivered by professional staff and supported by an active, dedicated volunteer program.


The Visitor Services Assistant supports CWB operations by providing a friendly face and first point-of-contact for visitors to CWB. This position combines reception, retail, and facility maintenance tasks to keep CWB an open, friendly place for visitors of all kinds. This position is supervised by the Operations and Programs Manager and will work closely with other staff and volunteers.

Visitor Services:

  • Welcome visitors

  • Answer questions about programs, boat rentals, exhibits and more

  • Answer phones and transfer to other staff as appropriate

  • Sell memberships, gift certificates, sailing lessons, and other items

  • Perform opening or closing duties, including highly accurate till counts, and unlocking/locking the building, depending on scheduled shifts

  • Assist with booking moorage in Lake Union Park

  • Monitor the email inbox

  • As needed, work special events both at CWB and offsite, performing similar duties as at the Front Desk

  • Input data collected from the Public Sail Manifests and Front Desk Guestbook

Gift Shop

  • Receive new merchandise shipments

  • Fulfill online orders

  • Sell merchandise

  • Prep the building for rentals that require merchandise to be moved into the merchandise closet

Volunteer Oversight:

  • Work with the volunteer coordinator to train new front desk and clean-up volunteers

  • Welcome and direct front desk and clean-up volunteers showing up for scheduled shifts

Restock and tidy as needed:

  • On-site collateral, such as flyers, brochures, posters, booklets, and other printed materials

  • Gift shop merchandise and displays

  • Restroom supplies

  • General gift shop and front desk area

  • Notify supervisor when collateral gets low and needs to be reordered


  • 18 years of age or older

  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills

  • Previous reception or retail experience

  • Proficiency in answering phones, taking messages, and passing on responses

  • Proficiency using office software like Excel, Word and email programs

  • Requires lifting and carrying weights of up to 25 pounds for short distances

  • Comfortable going up and down ladders
