We don’t normally have a 3rd Friday speaker in July. But when Roger Taylor said he’d be happy to present our CWB audience with an overview of the second volume of his biography of L. Francis Herreshoff we said, “Welcome aboard!”.
Like Volume I, “The Flowering of Genius” is a superb production, beautifully designed and printed, and brimming with 230 plans and 146 illustrations. There are several fold-out drawings so designs are shown at a legible scale. Roger’s presentation will weave nearly 100 of the graphics from the books into the tale of the second half of Herreshoff’s life and many of his most beautiful and significant designs.
L. Francis Herreshoff may have begun his career in the shadow of his famous father, Nathanael, but today he is recognized as the most remarkable yacht designer of his time. This volume features the notable 1931 ocean racer Landfall, the supremely beautiful Tioga, the magnificent Tioga II/Ticonderoga, and the distinctive 12-Metre Mitena. It includes Herreshoff’s long relationship with the “Rudder” magazine, including the How-To-Build series that introduced readers to the H-28. It covers the series of thoughtful articles later published as “The Common Sense of Yacht Design” and “The Compleat Cruiser”.
Roger Taylor met Herreshoff in the 1940s and became an admirer of his designs. That long friendship shows in the book’s details, including Herreshoff’s unique home, “the Castle”, overlooking Marblehead Harbor.
The book signing will immediately follow the presentation. The gift shop will remain open until 7:30 pm so books may be purchased. Books also may be pre-ordered through the CWB Gift Shop to be picked up that night at this link.
About the Speaker
Roger Taylor is a long-time friend of CWB. He is perhaps best-known as the founder and leader of International Marine Publishing Company but his credentials also include being a licensed captain with a “life list” of several hundred boats sailed, including 14 designed by L. Francis Herreshoff. Volume II is his ninth book on boats and boating.
About the 3rd Friday Speaker Series
The Center for Wooden Boats 3rd Friday Speaker Series is a monthly event where a speaker of wit and experience joins CWB to share their special knowledge. It is also an opportunity for CWB members to mingle with other attendees and the staff. The talks take place in the new Wagner Education Center, and just like museum admission, the program is always free.
Snacks and beverages will be available. Donations to help cover costs will be cheerfully and gratefully accepted.
