Oral History
This type of sailing in-shore fishing boat from Woods Hole, Mass. was designed for its geographic location. Its short, unstayed mast was needed because there was a fixed pedestrian bridge separating the cove where these boats were moored and open water. The fisher would row past the bridge and then set up the mast and sail.
Boat Story
Dewey is a replica of an 1850s Cape Cod fishing boat. She was built for CWB by the Seattle Central Community College Wood Construction Center's Marine Carpentry Program. The plans were obtained from the Mystic Seaport Museum in Connecticut and funding came from the Foley and Duggan families in memory of Dewey Duggan, a Seattle longshoreman. The donors wanted a working boat to symbolize the spirit of Dewey Duggan.
