Although it is not a native to the NW coast, the White Bear has been a popular part of The Center for Wooden Boats’ livery for almost three decades.

Boat Story

CWB founder Dick Wagner first discovered the White Bear from an article written by WoodenBoat Magazine about designers and builders across the United States who still practiced the craft of wooden boatbuilding. The White Bear is a lapstrake rowboat from White Bear Lake, MN designed by the Norwegian boat builder Adolf Amundson. When Amundson became too old to build the boats he had designed, he requested an apprentice from the local carpentry school and was presented with Dean Haynes. Following graduation from carpentry school Haynes had been working building coffins and was happy to leave his job to become an apprentice to Amundson.
