Oral History
Steam has been used to power watercraft since the early 1700s and is still in use today (in nuclear powered ships, for example). As a means of powering small boats, steam reached its peak in the 1890s. They were built as stock boats in every state that had lakes with summer homes. With the advent of small gasoline engines and readily available gasoline, steam power quickly lost popular appeal.
Boat Story
Puffin was restored by boatshop staff and volunteers in 2006, and is operated and maintained by a dedicated group of volunteers called the Steam Team. New members are always welcome, and training in steamboat operation is offered. If you are interested in joining the Steam Team, please contact CWB's volunteer coordinator.
The S.L. Puffin was donated by Bob Evans of Bozeman, Montana. Puffin is operated as part of CWB's education and public outreach programs. Free historic tours of Lake Union are frequently offered in the Puffin during the summer months, please inquire at the CWB Boathouse office for the current schedule.
