Salish Canoe
We are currently documenting this 16' Salish carved canoe which hangs on display as part of CWB's collection. It was determined to be from the early 1900s by Bill Holm, Curator Emeritus of Northwest Coast Indian Art at the Burke Museum and Professor Emeritus of Art History and Anrthopology at the University of Washington. The canoe is displayed adjacent to the canoe carving shed where our Artist in Residence, Haida carver Saaduuts, teaches and involves the community in carving dugout canoes and canoe culture. With a 4Culture grant we are documenting the boat according to HAER standards and will create a new interpretive panel for the canoe. Of note: there was an Indian canoe race at the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific (AYP) Exposition on September 6, 1909, where dugout canoes such as this one were paddled.
Stay tuned for more details about the canoe!
