Youth Beginning Sailing
Instructors: CWB Youth Sailing Instructors
Description: In this introduction to sailing, students learn the basic theory and terminology of sailing and begin to build a foundation of skills. Classes meet for a series of three-hour sessions with about a third of class time spent on land and two-thirds on the water. Students sail in pairs or sometimes solo in the 8’ El Toro prams.

Youth Intermediate Sailing

Description: Becoming a great sailor involves building a new set of reflexes. Students fine-tune their fundamental sailing skills while exploring new elements of sailing such as adventuring, marlinspike seamanship and advanced boat handling. This is the next step for students who know the basics of sailing and are ready to sail by themselves.

Grad School: Beetle Cats
Instructors: CWB Youth Sailing Instructors
Description: Ready to take sailing to the next level? Grad School focuses on the subtleties of sailing well and applying intermediate skills to a larger boat in our Livery Fleet. Students will learn to sail the Beetle Cat, a 12’ gaff rigged wooden boat first designed and built for youth in 1921. Sailing in pairs, we will practice advanced upwind and downwind sailing, balance and trim, man overboard, steering with the sail and docking. Advanced knot tying and reefing will also be covered. This class is great way to gain experience in larger boats available in our livery year round.

Science of Sailing
Instructors: CWB & PSC Instructors
Description: Pacific Science Center (PSC) and The Center for Wooden Boats (CWB) have teamed up to create a week of fun, science-filled sailing. Delve into the math and physics behind sailing and boat design. Investigate the convergence of wind, water, weather and the cause and effect of the wind in your sails and your hand at the helm. Spend your morning at PSC building model boats and conducting experiments, then walk to CWB to spend the afternoon sailing 8’ wooden El Toro prams in pairs on Lake Union. Chart your course and sail off on an adventure!

Words on Water
Instructors: CWB Youth Sailing Instructors
Description: Do you love books and stories? These daylong classes will delve into the maritime traditions through sailing, reading, sketching and journaling. The course will introduces sailing skills covered in Intermediate Sailing (including sailing solo) and sparks the Imagination through a diverse selection of maritime literature and writing exercises. Books and boats will complement each other to inspire creativity, independence and adventure.

El Toro Racing
Instructors: CWB Youth Sailing Instructors
Description: Just because school is starting doesn’t mean sailing ends! Join CWB for a fun introduction to racing on Saturday afternoons We’ll teach the basics of right of way rules, racing strategy and tactics and help refine boat handling skills in preparation for a real regatta! The session ends with the Norm Blanchard W.O.O.D. Regatta on September 29 & 30th. (Parent chaperones are encouraged during the last weekend).

Quick & Daring for Kids
Instructors: CWB Youth Sailing Instructors
Description: Could you design and build a boat in five days? Could you do it with a couple of sheets of plywood and whatever else you can find? Would you be bold enough to try your creation out on Lake Union? In this version of the popular Quick & Daring boatbuilding competition from the Lake Union Wooden Boat Festival, students will learn the basic principles of vessel design and construction, work in teams to build a boat from strange, wondrous and random materials construction and then sail and row their boats.

Shilshole Bay Yacht Club
SBYC is sponsoring full scholarships for underserved youth to attend Intermediate or Grad School sailing lessons at The Center for Wooden Boats and participate as crew (along with parent or guardian) onboard SBYC member boats for the The TransPuget Benefit Race on September 22, 2012. Youth Kayak Building
Description: Students will build their own 14’ foot stitch and glue Sea Kayak. Students will assemble their boats from kits, at the end of the week student boats will be ready for a sea trial and final finish and painting at home. Students will learn basic woodworking and contemporary boat construction techniques. The finished boats are fully decked and have two storage hatches.

Building a "Footy" Pond Boat
Description: Want to design and build your own pond boat? Here’s your chance. Learn what makes a sailboat perform and then design and build your own custom pond boat. The Footy is a type of pond boat that fits in a 1’ x 1’ box. Any boat that fits in this box can register with the Footy class, receive an official number and race against other Footys. Footys can be either radio controlled or free sailing (no radio control) students will take a finished free sailing footy home at the end of the week. Most free sailing Footys can be retrofitted for radio control. There will be a race on the model boat pond in Lake Union Park on Friday. School Year Sailing
Instructors: CWB Youth Sailing Instructors
Description: CWB offers Beginning and Intermediate Sailing during the school year to youth organizations, school groups, afterschool programs and scouting groups. Students have fun learning an outdoor skill and develop self-confidence and decision-making skills while learning patience, observation and teamwork. Students sail in pairs and learn the fundamentals of sailing during a series of six two-hour lessons.
Limit: 16 students (minimum 6)
