As a volunteer at The Center for Wooden Boats, you continue in the long tradition of lending a hand that began with the Center's inception in 1977. From that time on, volunteers have contributed significantly to the development of the Center and, through their energy and dedication, have helped make CWB the magical place that it is today.
The concept for CWB began at the Old Boathouse on Seattle's Lake Union in 1968. In the middle of one of Seattle's houseboat enclaves was a fleet of about 20 classic wooden rowing and sailing boats -- not only for viewing but for public use. Visitors discovered they could get free coffee, raid the fridge, offer endless advice to the owners of the Old Boathouse about how to maintain wooden boats, and trade information on plans, lumber, fastenings and tools.
It was the kind of learning experience we all long for when we visit a museum - an insider's back room where you can handle the exhibits, listen to experts and even argue with them!
As we move into the twenty-first century, CWB is both a window to the past and a beacon for the future, and we couldn't do it without your contribution to this ongoing adventure! Thank you!
