'To provide a gathering place where maritime history comes alive through direct experience, and our small craft heritage is enjoyed, preserved, and passed along to future generations.'
-Mission Statement, The Center for Wooden Boats
The Center for Wooden Boats is a unique museum in that we not only maintain and interpret
original historic wooden boats for public use, but we are also a community that is greatly defined by our corps of more than 600 active volunteers.
You can find volunteers here who can tell you the type of hardware used on a 1926 R-boat, or the best place to drop anchor in the San Juans. Our
volunteers obviously have a lot to offer – in the last year volunteers here have:
- Contributed more than 1,200 hours to our Wooden Boat Festival
- Contributed donations and time to our biggest fundraising auction ever!
- Given more than 3,000 public rides to visitors
- Taught over than 300 adults and kids to sail
- Spent 3,000 hours staffing our front desk
- Led trainings in sailing, racing, rigging, knot tying
- Sailed a historic longboat to Port Townsend and back
- Rented 2,926 boats
- Led tours, written grants, sanded boats, planted flowers, created databases, kept our computers running….
Volunteering at CWB has many rewards:
- A chance to support CWB educational and community outreach programs
- An opportunity to utilize your talents and develop new skills
- Flexible hours for students, professionals and seniors
- Exposure and access to our collection of traditional wooden boats
- Invitations to volunteer parties and special events
- A supportive environment where you can perform and grow
- Receive training in maritime skills (sailing, construction, etc)
- One free hour of boat time for every three hours
