Donate
a Boat
Benefits
of Donating Your Boat to The Center for Wooden Boats
- The Center for Wooden
Boats is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, making the value of your gift
tax-deductible.*
- By donating your boat
to a boat-related nonprofit, you derive the maximum applicable tax benefit.*
- Your donation will
benefit CWB and its hands-on maritime programs either directly, if the boat
is appropriate for use by CWB, or indirectly through sale of the boat by
CWB and use of the funds generated to support our programs.
- You avoid the time
and trouble of marketing your boat.
*CWB is not a tax-advisor.
Please consult a professional tax advisor for details of how making a donation
will benefit you specifically.
How
it works
-
You
contact CWB and let us know you're interested in the possibility of donating
your boat. We'll talk with you about your intentions for the donation. Some
donors want to know that CWB will keep the boat and use it in our programs;
other donors are comfortable with CWB either keeping the boat or selling
it to raise funding for our programs. We want to be sure that we understand
what your goals are.
- We will probably want
to take a look at the boat. As much as we appreciate being considered, we
aren't able to accept all the boats we are offered. We have, over time,
developed a pretty good sense of what we are able to use and what we will
be able to find a home for.
- If we both decide to
pursue the donation, we will give you a
Deed of Gift noting the donation. The Deed of Gift will be your documentation
for tax purposes. It will note that CWB is a non-profit organization, eligible
for tax-deductible donations and that no goods or services were given by
CWB to you in exchange for the boat. The value of any goods or services
exchanged would need to be deducted from the value of the gift. If the boat is to become a part of the CWB collection, you will need to have the boat appraised. The full appraised value of the boat can be deducted. If CWB plans on selling the boat, you do not have to get an appraisal. After the boat sells, you will receive IRS Form 1098 in the mail. This form will indicate the amount the vessel was sold for and you can take the full amount as a deduction.
- You sign the title
over to CWB. If you don't have a title because it was lost or destroyed,
we can provide you with information about how to sign the boat over to us.
- CWB takes delivery
of the boat. We prefer to have you bring the boat to CWB but we can often
arrange for folks to deliver it for you. That's pretty much it! It's that easy!
