Renting a Boat at CWB

Guidelines

• A sailing "check-out" is required before renting our classic boats. See below for more information on getting checked out.
• Our traditional wooden boats (all museum exhibits) are unique; some are old, all are special. Please use them with respect.
• Life jackets must be worn at all times while using our boats.
• No alcohol is allowed on board.
• Boats must stay on Lake Union, between the Aurora and I-5 bridges.
• While rowing or sailing our boats, please be alert to other traffic on the lake, especially boats entering and leaving marinas and waterways.
• Our exhibits may not be tied up to any docks, piers, or pilings, other than our own. Pease do not stop or go ashore.
• When weather conditions are adverse or unsafe for use of our exhibits, we regretfully must close the Livery until we feel conditions are again safe and favorable. We cease sailboat rentals in over 12 knots of wind.

Livery Hours

Our livery hours for 2007/2008 are:

March 21 - May 23 --

Daily -- Noon - 8:00 p.m.
Sept. 2 - Oct. 27 --
Daily -- Noon - 6:00 p.m.

During the winter, please make an appointment Tuesday through Friday.

Since our boats are museum pieces and we want to keep them safe, boat rentals will be suspended whenever the wind speed exceeds 12 knots or the livery manager deems that conditions warrant suspension.

During the winter season, livery will close at dusk. You can check our weather page for the time of sunset each day. Or call the front desk - (206) 382-2628.

Blackout Dates: Occasionally, we have to suspend boat rentals (for holidays, the Festival, etc.) The livery will be closed from Wednesday, June 27 - Friday, July 6, due to our Wooden Boat Festival. Visitors are invited to take part in our free rides June 30 - July 2, and July 4, during the Festival.

Check-Outs
Scheduling Checkouts

Before using our sailboats, a check-out must be arranged with one of our livery staff or sailing instructors. The purpose is to make sure you are comfortable handling traditional small boats and to answer any questions you may have about the boat you have chosen.

If you would like to brush up on your sailing ability or simply want some practice in our classic boats before doing a check-out, we offer one hour lessons for a reasonable price. (Call the front desk at 206-382-2628 to schedule lessons.)

There are two ways a person can get checked out:

• For guaranteed appointment times, schedule a check-out throught the front desk - in person or by telephone.
• Drop in and ask if there is an instructor available to do a check-out. Check-outs cannot be guaranteed without a prior appointment.

Check-out Skills Required

A check-out is not a sailing lesson. The person being checked out should be in complete control of the boat as if they were single-handing.

Below is a list of the skills that are required in order to check out:

• As the helmsman, sail away from the dock and out of the Center's channel; stay well clear of other boats and obstructions while obeying the rules of the road.
• Be able to sail four rapid tacks to windward.
• Sail directly into the wind and intentionally stop the boat. Sail off on either port or starboard tack, as directed by the instructor.
• Sail in a complete circle, excuting proper sail trim throughout the sequence of tacks and jibes, all voice commands, changed sail position and body motions executed in good control.
• Answer questions about right of way for specfic encounters during the test.
• Sail the boat back to the dock with all sails raised and luffing. The student should not leave the helm at any time during the docking maneuver. Multiple attempts are fine, provided good control of the vessel is maintained throughout.

You will be required to demonstrate the above skills during your checkout. If you do not feel comfortable with the skills listed, please feel free to take a one-on-one lesson or any other form of sailing review.
