March 1, 2008 - The Center for Wooden Boats and Washington State Parks and Recreation sign historic agreement at annual auction. The Center for Wooden Boats first stepped aboard at Cama Beach as an anchor tenant. Now, after the signing of a 30-year cooperative agreement with Washington Parks and Recreation Commission, has gained the rank of enduring partner. The agreement, which aims to bring hands-on programs to Cama Beach State Park, was officially signed by both parties during CWB's annual auction, March 1. "It is very exciting to be entering this agreement with The Center for Wooden Boats," said Rex Derr, State Parks director. "Development of marine education programs, to include early Native American life in the area, is a goal of the State Parks Commission. All partners will pay special attention to the sensitive environment in the area around Cama Beach as we proceed on our work together." The Commission unanimously approved the long-term lease at a special public meeting in Olympia Feb. 20. One particularly windy day, members of the CWB staff were curious after finding an empty barrel floating beside the docks.The curiosity turned to horror after they realized that was the barrel that held many of our priceless umiak paddles. After many rescue missions and some thoughtful, yet anonymous, returns, we have managed to wrangle about 13 paddles back to a MUCH heavier barrel. But there are still about 12 paddles floating somewhere on Lake Union, Portage Bay or the Straits of Juan de Fuca. It has been a while since they went missing but it would still be greatly appreciated if anyone who knew of any of their whereabouts could return them home. One particularly windy day, mem= bers of the CWB staff were curious after finding an empty barrel float= ing beside the docks.The curiosity turned to horror after they realized tha= t was the barrel that held many of our priceless umiak paddles. After many = rescue missions and some thoughtful, yet anonymous, returns, we have manage= d to wrangle about 13 paddles back to a MUCH heavier barrel. But there are = still about 12 paddles floating somewhere on Lake Union, Portage = Bay or the Straits of Juan de Fuca. It has been a while since they went mis= sing but it would still be greatly appreciated if anyone who knew of any of= their whereabouts could return them home. And we'll be sure to write = our name on them from now on.
