Mothers' Day Sail
The traditional Mothers' Day Sail was held this year on Saturday, May 13, 2006, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This is the seventh year that The Center for Wooden Boats has sponsored the event, but for the first time it was held on Saturday instead of Sunday, to make it easier for those who have family commitments on Mothers' Day itself to participate. This worked so well that the group decided to hold the Mothers' Day weekend event on Saturday in the future. The fleet was quite diverse, including the Joshua, which has been a popular attraction every year, the schooner Sophia Christina, and three boats brought up from CWB at Lake Union by a crew of volunteers: the tugboat, sharpie Betsy D and the Center's signature boat, the gillnetter Admirable. The boats from Lake Union set off on Thursday, stopped overnight at Langley, and anchored off Camano State Park on Friday. The Camano group hosted an impromptu salmon bake for the Lake Union volunteers Friday night and a pancake breakfast on Saturday morning.

About 160 people got out on the water during the day, including one 84 year old lady who came all alone and went out for her first sail. In addition, tables were set up in the Park picnic shelter featuring information on the Center, T-shirts, caps and other items with the new Cama Beach logo, and coloring pages for kids. The weather was excellent, sunny and with a brisk wind to drive the sailboats nicely. Many people came to the beach just to watch, with Joshua and Sophia Christina drawing particular attention. One volunteer reported that his passengers thought it was "more fun to sail in the smaller boats but they loved to look at the big ones." Click here for some photos of the event.

Thanks to all the volunteers who have worked hard to make these events a success.

Upcoming Events

Festivals and Fairs
Volunteers from Camano will be needed for the upcoming Fourth of July festival at LakeUnion (July 1-4) and also for the Stanwood-Camano Fair and Parade (August 4-6) so check your schedules, everyone! We plan to sell more of the Cama Beach/CWB items at the Stanwood-Camano Fair. The logo looks really sharp, and quite a few of them were sold at the Mothers' Day Saturday event.

Volunteer Meeting
Next meeting of the Camano volunteers will be Saturday, June 24, 2006 from 10 a.m. - noon at the Camano State Park Ranger Office/Shop.

Cama Beach Park Report

Jeff Wheeler, Park Ranger, reports that the new construction phase has begun. The archaeological survey has been completed and the digging sites have been refilled and leveled. Most of the finds by the archaeological team were tools. Carbon dating takes the site, which is the largest undisturbed midden in the Puget Sound area, back about 2,400 years and indicates a summer fishing encampment used by at least 5 area tribes. Elders of the Tulalip Tribe recently performed a cleansing spirit ceremony for the entire park area.

Full construction schedule is to follow this spring, with bids being opened in early December and construction beginning in February. Current estimates are that the opening will be scheduled for May 2007.

Arrangements are being made to allow the many volunteer groups, including CWB, to continue their projects while construction is underway. The Cama Beach area may not be accessible for extended periods, so other areas, including the newly renovated park shelter at Camano State Park, may be used.

Volunteer woodworkers continue to produce large numbers of furnishings for the future park and buildings, many of the designs taken from historic templates at the original Cama Beach resort. These include Adirondack chairs, rockers, benches and tables. Much of the wood used comes from trees in the park that had to be removed during the construction of roads and infrastructure.

Much of the staging for construction will take place in the new parking lot completed last year. When the park opens, this area, landscaped with replanted native ferns and other plants native temporarily removed during construction, will provide a pleasant forest atmosphere, with marine views from some areas.

Site planning includes a new ranger's residence in the upland area of the park, as well as a shop complex. The shop complex will include a large wood shop, metal fabrication shop, storage area and offices. It will serve both the new Cama Beach Park and the existing Camano Park. Space for CWB to receive and store floats and boat construction materials has been planned for in the shop complex area.

Information on the status and progress of the Cama Beach Park is listed on the Washington State Parks Website or contact Jeff Wheeler at cama.beach@parks.wa.gov.

We look forward to seeing you at Cama Beach!
