Cast
Off!
Free
Public Sail
Every Sunday at 2 p.m.
Enjoy free
half-hour sails on one of our classic boats or a ride on our 1906 Steam Launch
Puffin. Our Cast Off! program allows visitors the chance to sail in
boats that are too large or too complex to be a part of our regular livery
program. Currently, we're sailing on Colleen Wagner, our new Sharpie.
You may also have the chance to find out what it's like to sail Admirable,
our recently restored Bristol Bay gillnetter and our logo boat, or Amie,
a Friendship sloop. Come down and join us any Sunday (weather permitting)
for a free afternoon sail or steamboat ride on Lake Union. Please feel free
to call us around noon on Sunday to check weather conditions. Cast
Off is a very popular program. During the summer, it is a good idea to arrive
at least one hour ahead of time to get on our 2:00 p.m. sail.
Due to schedule conflicts at the Center, our Sunday Public Sails are not offered on certain days throughout the year - please call the Center to ensure that they are operating on the day you plan to come.
Canoe Carving
Every Sunday 1 - 4 p.m.
Sāādūūts, CWB's Artist-in-Residence, is a Master Haida carver. He has helped build over 5 canoes in the Seattle area. Currently there are 2 traditional cedar dugout canoes being carved. The Steve Philipp, a 25' canoe, is nearing completion and will become part of our fleet when it is done. Work has recently begun on another canoe. The log is an amazing 51' long. Everyone is welcome to come help carve, meet Sāādūūts, and become part of the canoe family. Free.

Norm Blanchard WOOD Regatta
September 28 - 30, 2007
6:00 p.m. Friday to 5:00 p.m. Sunday
CWB Boathouse & Lake Union
Join in the FUN at The Center for Wooden Boats’ Annual Norm Blanchard WOOD (Wooden Open & One Design) Regatta, honoring the best known name in wooden boatbuilding and yachting in the Pacific Northwest. Norman C. Blanchard’s Blanchard Boat Company turned out more than 2,000 boats in 60+ years during the past century. Quality, performance and longevity are the hallmarks of Norm Blanchard.
The Norm Blanchard WOOD Regatta is open to ALL wooden sailboats - from El Toros, to Union Bay Skiffs, to large racer cruisers. We also welcome this year's Classic Plastic Fleet - the San Juan 21, a Northwest Classic.
Come down to the docks on Friday for a Welcome Party. A day of racing on Saturday will conclude with an evening dinner with a special guest speaker. The regatta ends Sunday with a traditional dock-side Awards Ceremony & Celebration.
There will be a Skippers' Meeting at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the CWB Boathouse. Racing will start at 12:00 p.m. Saturday, with three races, and at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, with two races. This is a FUN regatta, so NO PROTESTS will be allowed.
The participants will be divided into one-design fleets (four or more of a kind will constitute a fleet). There will also be an open class category. Sailboats participating in fleets will race against each other for fleet honors. The participants in the one-design category will be rated using the latest Portsmouth Yardstick ratings. In the case of larger boats, the latest GHS (General Handicap System) rating will be used. If your boat does not have a rating, the Race Committee will assign you one based on your known performance against those competing against you.
Entry fee is only $1/foot. The entry fee includes race entry, Welcome Party, continental breakfasts on race days and Sunday Awards Ceremony. The Saturday dinner with guest speaker is $15 per person (maximum of 75 tickets available).
Click here for a registration form or stop by The Center for Wooden Boats at 1010 Valley St., Seattle, WA.

The Story of the Disappearing Propeller Boats
September 21 , 2007
7:00 p.m.
CWB Boathouse
Bob Hollingsworth has explored, through archives, oral history and direct experience, the history of the Disappearing Propeller Motorboat Company. Bob will talk about the design, construction and restoration of a DISPRO boat and its engine. Also, Bob will recount his Dippy Club "Misery Cruise" on Lake Huron, an annual event for the Dippy clan. This will be an incredible story by an exuberant speaker on the boats and boating in an almost forgotten area north of Toronto.

7:00 p.m.

Cedar Charnley will tell the story of how a vision born in a kitchen blossomed into a 23'9" vessel, built by 8 friends as a learning experience. Then they took their open oar & sail powered boat from its building site on Lopez Island to SE Alaska. All within 9 months!
The Schooner Wawona

7:00 p.m.
CWB Boathouse
Joe Follensbee, the author of the recently published book "Shipbuilders, Sea Captains and Fishermen: The Story of the Schooner Wawona", will tell us more than the dry statistics of this 100 year old schooner. We will hear the inside scoops of the builder, captain and crews of the nationally historic 165' lumber and cod fishing vessel. We will hear of the ingenuity, courage, seamanship and quirky antics of the people whose hearts, souls and callused hands made Wawona the legend she is.
